World > Europe > Greece > Lefkada
Lefkada has always held a special place in my heart. My father was born there and moved to Australia at a young age, it was something that I never knew growing up, it is only now in my 20's that I have embarked now on my second journeys to explore this beautiful island and reconnect to my Greek heritage.
Agios Nikitas is a beautiful seaside village located on the West coast of the Island of Lefkada, although small it offers a wide variety of Tavernas, bars and cafes to indulge your senses. As well as the main beach by the village of Agios Nikitas there is Milos beach a short walk or taxi boat ride away, it offers a larger, rougher ocean experience and is stunning to say the least.
One of Lefkada's most recent acquisitions is the marina, the most modern in Greece, situated on the East side of the town. Its mooring capacity is for 620 boats. It has a 1700m long breakwater and 940 meters of floating wharfs.
The small town of Lefkada manages to pull itself from its slumber at around 10 in the morning, by that time it is in full swing with cafes and restaurants serving Freddoccinos and fresh Greek cuisine. Walking through the streets of this old town, one feels the age of the buildings but also experiences the renewal of the township through well maintained facades and fresh balcony gardens. An eclectic mix of modernity and traditional, Lefkada pulls itself from its sleepy siesta into the new age with style and artistic grace.
